Modern times in XXI Century?
When we decide to become English teachers, we must be concern about all the aspects this thing brings to us. We need to get knowledge about history, culture, environment, context and more of those countries which made of English their native language. Those aspects are responsible of how far the language has been continually evolving within the years, and that changes exist until now. But, what can we do for being involved with this type of culture?
One of the advantages of being in the XXI century is that we have lots of sources where to find information about English. For example, if we are in Chile, we can hear a radio from the UK in live! Also, we can talk with a native English speaker without knowing him/her, instantly! So, it’s our work to take advantage of those opportunities we can have in order to be closer to English language.
But one thing is clear. The history of those English native countries is essential in our works as future teachers, and one of the biggest tools we can manage are films. And especially I can recommend “Modern Times” by Charles Chaplin.
When we watch the movie, we can identify several aspects of how industries were changing due to Industrial Revolution, and how people should work there. If we think about progress, we think that it’s a nice concept which brings good things and better times for people, but this is not the case; we can see that Charles Chaplin interpret a worker who is in the middle of a work revolution, with huge machines, and poor conditions and rights for people in charge of manufacturing and give life to the industries. This movie shows us an ironic side of what people lived in those years. How hard life was, and the non appropriate conditions people should work. Due to this, we can reflect about the history of the countries. About the power some people had, and how they imposed it in order to get more and more money, without being concern about other people around.
If we want to be teachers, we need to focus in more things than in the contents the curriculum says we have to teach. We need to teach values, ways of seeing, critical thinking, and more. With this movie, you can teach about what is fear and what is not, about the rights people should have, and also about respect. It’s necessary that people know about being tolerant in order to reach a good society. If teacher, who are one of the formers of our basic society, do not show about being a good human being, who does?
This movie is a great tool in order to build a good lesson with your students. To motivate them for having a better community with their partners. In your hands you have a very interesting tool for developing a perfect class. Don’t miss it and Good Luck!

Cultura y civilizacion I
This new semester, in the middle of our career, we have a new lesson, called "Cultura y Civilizacion I", which sounds completely new for us.And we are waiting that this new course cold help us a lot in our becoming of english teachers!
If you ask me about what do I expect about this class, I hope we could learn a lot of British and
American culture, where English Laguage was born. If we can know about these cultures, we can emphatize with that countries and we could get to imagine the bases of the language we are studying for the future Also, I think it's very important that a teacher could be a person with lots of knowledge in severals areas, like history, culture, philosophy, language, and so. Because we are going to work with children who are full of doubts!.
Hopingwe all can have a good semester.
Greetings!
